saying that carly was bored would be an understatement. she had absolutely nothing to do, and not a lot of friends. after just moving from maine, she didn't know anyone here in serenade. however, she did like that area better than she did in maine. but that didn't make up for the lack of friends that carly had. well, she had one friend so far, and that was megan. megan seemed to be her best friend, and she wanted to keep it that way. however, carly really didn't have any other friends besides megan. sooner or later she was hoping to make a few new friends, but if that didn't happen she was just fine with megan.
for some reason, carly was walking around. no, she didn't really know the area, and yes, she was probably going to get lost. it wasn't safe for carly to travel anywhere alone, even with a map. she was trying to see everything that this town had to offer. it was never the easiest being the new kid in town. the reason her family had moved here was because it was where her parents originally grew up, and they had a lot of friends here. they used to visit often, but she never really got to go sightseeing. once she had been able to go to the lake, and she enjoyed it there. however, that was about two years ago. carly had always been into checking out new sites, and seeing what the world had to offer. it was part of the reason she carried her camera in her bag at all times. she never knew when she was going to have the opportunity to take a picture of something extremely beautiful. she had thought about taking a photography class, but she just had to ask her parents first.
so, carly had no idea where she was now. it looked like a town square, but she was never good at picking things out. she didn't really care though. she was up for an adventure. smiling, she pulled out her camera and started taking pictures of every random little thing she could. the pictures could be horrible, but she didn't mind. carly even took pictures of some random people just for fun. people may think of that as being a stalker, but she was just having fun. she giggled a little bit to herself before putting her camera away. she figured it was safe to put away for awhile. carly loved being silly, even if there was no one else to be silly with. she missed her friends back home, but she figured that she should just start over and forget about the fact that she can't be with them like she wanted.
carly skipped around the block for a bit. she was full of energy, just like she always was. no one could bring her mood down. in fact, no one ever brought her down. carly tried to see the good in everything. whenever someone tried to bring her down she always smiled and ignored them. she was never the type of girl to cry over little things. what people had to say was their opinion, and words couldn't hurt her that bad. her parents had taught her that people were going to be mean, and she just had to smile and try to ignore them.
after almost running into a man, carly decided to stop skipping around. the man had given her a dirty look, and she didn't like that. hey, she was just having fun! carly giggled a bit to herself, before calming down a bit. the problem with having so much energy was that half of the time she didn't have anybody to share all of it with. sure, her friends back home had energy, but they never had as much as carly. one thing that carly really hated was when she wanted to get outdoors and do something, but her friends were holding her back. she hated that with a burning passion. sitting inside on the computer all day was not her source of fun. she liked to be outdoors, getting fresh air. sure, carly liked to check things on the computer, but she never understood how people could sit online all day and not get bored. sure, carly liked to get online so that she could check things, but staring at a screen all day had never amused her.
finally, carly sat down on a bench and looked around. there were a lot of people out today. it was a small town, but she thought that there would be less people out wandering around. taking out here phone, carly read all of her text messages. her mom had texted her, wondering what time she would be home. quickly, carly replied back and shoved her phone back in her pocket. her mom had always been the type of mom to always wonder where her kids were. carly didn't mind it though, it showed that her mom cared. looking down, carly noticed a bruise on her arm, and she didn't know where it was from. when it happened, she must not have noticed. carly hated pain, and when she hurt herself she was the type to whine about it. her arm wasn't hurting her now, so she was okay.
no one seemed to be paying any attention to her, so carly pulled out the book she had to read for school. it was a boring book in her opinion, but it had to be read. carly did not want to fall behind in school. if she did, her parents would yell at her. for school, she had to keep an average of at least ninety five or else her parents would be mad. it stressed her out at times, but she knew it had to be done so she didn't complain. after high school her parents were expecting her to join a good college, and hopefully go far. the book she was reading for school was frankenstein. carly had never been into books like that. if carly was going to enjoy a book, she wanted it to be romance. carly was definitely a hopeless romantic. sighing, she opened the book and started reading, hoping someone would come interrupt her.

Lillian had woken up that morning feeling like there was a good day brewing somewhere. Unfortunately, it didn’t seem to be brewing for her. Instead, her mom had dragged her out of the house and into town. Lillian had been hoping to do something fun today. Like go hang out with her friend Holly at her house. She had a brand new oversize trampoline they could do gymnastics on and she was in the middle of redoing her room and her parents had let her get a queen-size bed that had come in just two days ago that they could share for a sleepover that night. But no, her mother had other things planned. She and Lillian were going to go see the new Gnomeo & Juliet Movie. Lillian had decided to go along, but she had not agreed to go shopping with her mom; something her mom had deemed entirely necessary.
Lillian was walking out of a local boutique, bored as ever. Her mom had dragged her to a woman’s boutique. It wasn’t even one of those that had a special section for juniors or anything, so she didn’t have much to look at. All the rings had been too big for her dainty little fingers. Most of the jewelry was targeted to entice the middle-aged woman, and trust her, it worked. Not that it was necessarily ugly or anything, it just wasn’t something she would wear herself. It was something her mom would wear; which was why Lillian was starting to get annoyed with her mom as she tried on dress after dress, jackets layering over blouses, jeans that didn’t seem to fit just right, shoes that never seemed to go with anything in her closet at home. She was worse about clothes shopping that Karolina, her older sister.
Lillian had tried not to complain, but her mom had gotten to her last nerve after a while and instead of just rolling her eyes and going with it like she usually did, Lillian had done something she had never done before. She went and actually picked a fight, on purpose, with her mom to get away and out of the store. But, in the end, Lillian hadn’t been happy like she had thought by getting to get out of there. Instead, she was mad at herself for fighting with her mom; especially in front of the store clerk. Sure, the lady had been nice, and luckily she was the only one, and a close friend of the family whom they knew would be quiet, but still, it was embarrassing.
She was supposed to be staying good. After all, she was the mayor’s daughter. Everyone expected her to be the perfect little girl. Like Serenade’s Sweetheart, right? But Lillian had not asked for that, and sometimes it just seemed so hard to keep up. Sometimes she enjoyed being a favorite of the local newspaper. If the kid next door got straight A’s, he got his picture on the back page with everyone else, including Lillian. But, if LJ got straight A’s, it was mentioned in the city’s local paper both in the picture at the back, at least once more, if not twice. It would be mentioned in the mayor’s report. After all, he was dad, and any good dad loved to boast about his daughter’s goodness, and then, occasionally the fact might somehow get slipped into another story if it included the mayor or if it had something to do with the local education.
She knew Karolina was trying to get out of the whole good-girl image, but Lillian was only twelve, so she was still trying to stay in it. Lillian thought about cursing right then and there, but it wouldn’t do any good. Her dad was the mayor, and if anyone heard her, she’d be dead. Not to mention, she hated the use of such language. She found it vulgar and a one hundred percent turn off. So, instead, Lillian took a deep breathe and exhaled a laugh puff of air, harrumphing loudly. No one seemed to look, though. But that was okay with her. She really wasn’t looking for any attention. She just wanted to escape all this craziness of being a preteen. She couldn’t even imagine being a teenager; all that drama? LJ wasn’t sure she was ready for it, and whether she wanted any of it, either.
Lillian looked around the town square, wondering what she could do. Should she just try and forget what had happened? Should she go and apologize to her mom. Ugh, why couldn’t her mom come and apologize to her? After all, she was the adult, and LJ was just was just a kid. Life was not fair; not fair at all. She hated this. She kept looking around and decided to start walking. After a couple of minutes, though, her legs were starting to hurt. There hadn’t been any place to sit at the boutique, so she had been standing for a while now. Lillian spotted a bench. There was some girl sitting there, but there was still plenty of room. After all, Lillian’s butt didn’t need much room. She walked over and noticed the girl reading a book. Lillian sat down with a loud and audible “Ugh,” as she leaned back and crossed her arms defiantly over her chest.
